Mounjaro & Weight Loss

You might hear in the news that weight loss injections can be prescribed by your GP from June 2025.

Whilst this is true in other areas of the country, no firm decision has been made in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) how GPs will be responsible for this. The local Integrated Care Board (ICB) are yet to finalise the details surrounding this and we are not expecting to have any form of guidance until at least August/September 2025 in relation to this.

In addition, the criteria to qualify will be very strict and we suspect that only a handful of patients will be eligible on the NHS initially. NHS England has provided funding for a very limited number of patients to be prescribed Mounjaro (425 in total for this year for the whole of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland).

NHS LLR has also decided that patients cannot be referred for NHS care to Right to Choose providers like ‘Oviva.’

The criteria are very strict (see below – for this year a BMI greater than 40, and at least four qualifying medical problems), but even so the number of eligible patients in LLR will be far in excess of the number being funded.

Hypertension
Dyslipidaemia
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
Cardiovascular disease
Type 2 diabetes mellitus

To avoid wasted appointments and disappointment, please refrain from requesting an appointment solely for the discussion of Mounjaro as the GP will not be able to prescribe it currently.
